Pakistani Bridal Makeup

Clown bride… that’s what I think of when I think of Pakistani brides of the past.  I cannot believe what so-called makeup artists would make gorgeous Pakistani girls look like on their wedding days.  For Western brides, the tradition is “less is more” and brides choose to go for an “enhanced” look of themselves.   Now I don’t think that correlates at all to the beauty, intricacy, and boldness of a Pakistani bride.  Beautiful faces with done up eyes, bold lips and softly blushed cheeks are essential to Pakistani brides…we have intricate outfits, heavy jewelry, having a bare face just makes the look incomplete!

I just barely began to schedule my makeup trials (soo essential brides!) and I’m looking to Pakistani fashion sites for inspiration…I’ve been looking at the posh new Pakistani salons back in Karachi to see what the new trends in makeup are.

Here are a few photos of some beautiful Pakistani brides with their makeup:

A little more subtle bride

I love this because it’s a Pakistani bride’s definition of subtle (done at Rukaiya’s Salon in Karachi)

Here’s a picture from the amazing Bina Khan who is arguably the best makeup artist in Karachi…. she made this little Pakistani bride look so pretty… look at her eyes and her glowing skin and her soft lips!

Bina Khan's make up on a Pakistani bride

Not to mention how beautiful the embroidery on her dress is and the jewelry!  Everything on here is simple yet she really looks beautiful.  I’m going to take this photo to my trials because her skin tone matches mine more than the other models I see posted on these websites!

Here are some other photos that I’m in love with, all from salons in Karachi:

I can definitely do without the bright pink lips but I love how her eyes pop.

Now this below is definitely something I’m going to take to my trials too… her face looks really clean, love her eyes, and her lips are not too shiny but they look good.

And now I have to show you my most favorite bride, hopefully she doesn’t get mad, but she was the most beautiful bride I’ve seen… my cousin!!  Her makeup was done in West Palm Beach by a lady named Sumaiya Waheed (who really needs a website!)

My Beautiful Cousin

I included a photo where she’s looking down so you can really appreciate her eyes.  I love that she chose the accents of her dress (green) as her eyeshadow color rather than use red or gold eyeshadow which is really typical of Pakistani brides…. really unique and looks amazing on her.

Anyway, just some photos of Pakistani brides.

And for all my non-Pakistani friends, hope this gives you a glimpse of how my wedding will be!

*Yes, we wear all that jewelry (the head pieces, called a teeka/tikka are a must for a bride!)
*Yup, we have our veil (called dupattas) draped like that… and yes its usually made of silk and is really heavily embroidered.  There’s a whole blog post about that coming, because draping a dupatta is really an art!
*And yessss we wear that much makeup and love getting dolled up for our weddings!  There is no such thing as “natural makeup”… but thankfully more modern Pakistani brides have kept the outrageous makeup of days past under control a bit!

Tips for other brides:
-Research makeup artists, get referrals from friends
-Get a trial!  Usually these are discounted over the normal rates they charge, and some places even give them to you for free if you pay in full for you wedding on that date.
-Take photos for inspiration, especially of your dress and also photos of other brides for inspiration
-Take pictures after your trial so that your makeup teams remembers how they did your makeup for your big day!

Some salons in Southern California that I’m looking at for bridal makeup:
-Oscar Naranjo at Ziba Beauty. He’s infamous in the South Asian bridal community, the first name that comes to mind when they discuss makeup artists.
-Jeannie Jeffries at  Couture Beauty Team. She specializes in South Asian bridal and does an incredible job.  She’s a little more subtle than Oscar I hear.
Monique Powers whom I met at a South Asian bridal show.  She’s certified by Here Comes the Guide and does a really good job–uses airbrushing!
Flawless Faces in Costa Mesa amazing girls who post photos periodically on their blog, enough photos to show me that they definitely can create the dramatic and beautiful look I’m going for.  And yes, you’ll see Gretchen from the Real Housewives of Orange County‘s photos are on there periodically because apparently this place is her preferred makeup spot! nice.

Anyway, so those are the top four places I’m visiting for my makeup… always looking for suggestions!

Wedding Invitations: The First Impression of Your Wedding!

So I am currently in the midst of trying to finalize my wedding invitations to get printed! I know that I cannot wait for the box to arrive with my cards… I think that’s when it will finally be real to me.  “Mr. & Mrs. Wasim Ahmad invite you to celebrate the marriage of their daughter, Sidra Ahmad to Nikolce Trajcevski…” EEE cannot wait until I have those in my hands!  And yes, that’s his full name.  :p

Right now I’m trying to figure out the proper wording for our wedding invitations.  There are so many ways to invite people to your wedding!! There is “request the pleasure of your company” or “request the honor of your presence” or what I have written above! Decisions decisions.  There are a ton of websites to help out though and I’m grateful for that.

I love Wedding Paper Diva’s for their amazing wedding invitations…. they have regular digital wedding invitations, a thermography collection, and a letterpress collection.  Letterpress, for those of you who don’t know, is the oldest printing technique that is also incredibly expensive… it requires actually creating a metal plate with your invitation and printing onto individual pieces of paper… it’s a very unique trade which is why it’s so expensive to get.  I’ve seen 100 invitations go for $700…. definitely pricey but really lovely!

Wedding Paper Divas has really cute modern and contemporary styles and I’ve ordered a ton of samples–narrowing it down is the hard part!  I recommend ordering samples!  I ordered some wedding invitation samples from a website called RexCraft for free, but Wedding Paper Divas charges.  Of the 15 or so invitation samples I’ve ordered…. I only really LOVE 3-4 of the ones I’ve gotten.  The thing is, I liked all 15 of them online…. so it truly is important to see the invitations in person before placing that expensive order.  I spent maybe $20 total on ordering samples, but it’s absolutely worth the money.

Anyway wedding invitations are really the first impression your guests will have of your wedding.  Here are some super cute styles.  I’m not choosing this one, but I think is perfect for the modern and quirky bride:

Chrysanthemum Burst : Midori from Wedding Paper Divas

Here’s another that I think would be really cute, a play on vintage while still super romantic and elegant:

Wedding Paper Divas

And now, for the design my mom wants me to order… yes, they have an entire ethnic section that includes Pakistani and Indian style wedding invitations!!

Paisley Bliss – Wedding Paper Divas

I ordered this sample, the “Paisley Bliss” and I think it’s really beautiful in person, but I don’t think it’s one that I’ll be sending out.  They have many great ethnic invitations on this website though!  So perfect for my kind of wedding :p

Minted.com also has some cute designs but I found the invitation I want on Wedding Paper Divas so I never ended up ordering samples from there.  Here is a cute winter wedding invitation style from Minted that I love!

Winter Flourish - Minted.com

I LOVE the design of this one, the “Winter Flourish”, it’s so unique and fun…not your typical wedding invitation at all..

Here’s my dilemma now…. I am including a response card and am worried that people will fill in extra guests on their cards, which, is so inappropriate.  I was going to write this on the response card:

_____ seats have been reserved in your honor
_____ accepts with pleasure
_____ regretfully declines

Now I think that’s a good way of telling people that only a certain number of seats have been saved for them…. but I’m still worried people are going to write things in! So I wanted to write this little disclaimer at the bottom:

Due to space limitations, we kindly request that extra guests not be added.

Ok, even as I write that above line, I cringe.  Because I know it sounds awful and tacky… so I’m left with this dilemma, do I pray that the “_ seats have been reserved in your honor” do the trick and give people the hint?

Traditional Pakistani Mehndi with a Twist

I love traditional Pakistani Mehndis!  They are so fun and have an incredible amount of color, singing and dancing. My personal take is not to spend a ridiculous amount of money on my Mehndi because I’d rather it be budgeted towards the wedding, to have a spectacular wedding because that’s the best part of the events.  But, I can always dream!  I made this cute little inspiration board on Project Wedding, and thought I’d share ideas for a fancy, colorful and traditional Pakistani Mehndi:

I remember going to Mehndis in Karachi when I was younger.  They would close off streets with bright tents, the bride’s cousins would dress in matching yellow and green outfits, and girls would be wearing glass bangles up to their elbows. I feel like I saw a ton of Dahlias and Jasmine flowers, and of course, as pictured here, the bride’s hands were covered in Henna.

I think a perfect outfit for a bride would be this Nomi Ansari peshwas, which is a traditional outfit that never goes out of style.  Nomi Ansari showed this outfit at Pakistan’s Bridal Couture Week in November 2010.

I love that it has shades of orange, yellow and bright pink on a crinkle chiffon type outfit.  Love it and I think it goes so perfectly with my traditional Mehndi dream event.

There’s a tent company called Raj Tents that rents out luxurious Moroccan and Indian style tents.  Super pricey… which is why this event will just remain a dream for now.  How fun would one of their tents be for a Mehndi though!!
